Brain Fog and Concentration Problems

Do you recognize this?
Mid-sentence, you lose the word you were just about to say. A name you always knew suddenly won't come. Meetings suddenly require far more concentration than before. This is often called brain fog, and it's one of the least discussed but most unsettling menopause symptoms, precisely because it makes women worry about their memory.
Many women recognize:
- Trouble finding words during a conversation
- Forgetting names, appointments, or where you put something
- Thinking through a haze: clear reasoning takes more effort
- Reduced mental stamina toward the end of the day
Up to 60% of women experience cognitive symptoms during menopause. It's not a sign of something more serious, but it is something to take seriously.
Why does this happen?
Up to 60% of women experience cognitive symptoms during menopause. Estrogen has a direct influence on the brain: it supports the connections between brain cells, neuroplasticity, and the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter essential for memory and attention.
Many women describe it as thinking through fog: clear reasoning takes more effort, words are harder to find, and concentration requires more energy than before.
Often more than just estrogen is at play. Sleep deprivation, an underactive thyroid, and deficiencies in vitamin B12 or folic acid produce similar symptoms. A disrupted microbiome can also play a role, since the gut produces a large share of your neurotransmitters. That's exactly why broader testing is worthwhile before attributing the symptom to hormones alone.

What can you do yourself?
These adjustments can help clear your head:
- Work on your sleep. Enough deep sleep is one of the most important factors for a clear head.
- Exercise regularly. Physical activity supports blood flow to the brain and the formation of new connections.
- Stabilize your blood sugar with regular, protein-rich meals, since fluctuations worsen brain fog.
- Build in breaks. Mental fatigue builds up over the course of the day; short rest moments help you stay sharp.
How Menovia addresses this
At Menovia, we take cognitive symptoms seriously and look more broadly than just sex hormones. During the intake, a BIG-registered doctor discusses your symptoms and their impact on your daily functioning. Through blood testing we map out your hormone levels, and depending on your package, also your thyroid function, vitamin B12, and folic acid, all three of which affect your cognitive functioning.
Based on that, the doctor draws up a personal treatment plan, often with personally dosed bio-identical hormones. Many women find their concentration and memory improve as hormonal balance is restored. Every 12 weeks we evaluate and adjust.
You can get started quickly: no waiting list, and the 10-minute introductory call is free.

Frequently asked questions
No. Brain fog during menopause is a hormonal effect on the brain and is usually temporary. If you have persistent or serious concerns, the doctor is of course happy to discuss this with you during the intake.
For many women the situation improves once hormone levels stabilize in postmenopause. Support through lifestyle or hormone therapy can relieve symptoms sooner.
Many women find their concentration and memory improve when hormonal balance is supported. Whether this fits you is assessed by the doctor during the intake.
Since May 2026, part of the consultations are reimbursed through supplementary insurance, depending on your insurer and policy.
