Vaginal Dryness

Dryness and discomfort that don't go away on their own: vaginal dryness during menopause is very treatable, you don't have to just accept it.

Do you recognize this?

Sex suddenly hurts where it always used to feel natural. Everyday things like cycling or sitting for a long time become uncomfortable. Vaginal dryness is one of the symptoms women find hardest to talk about, even though it's actually very treatable.

Many women recognize:

  • Dryness, itching, or a burning sensation
  • Pain during sex (dyspareunia)
  • More frequent bladder infections or urine leakage
  • A feeling of vulnerability in the vaginal area

These symptoms usually get worse without treatment. That's exactly why acting early is worthwhile.

Why does this happen?

Estrogen keeps the vaginal wall healthy and protects against infections. When estrogen is lost, the vagina, urethra, and bladder become more vulnerable, which can lead to dryness, bladder infections, and urine leakage.

Unlike hot flashes, which decrease over time for many women, these symptoms usually get worse without treatment instead. They worsen as estrogen levels drop further, even long after menopause.

That's exactly why it's worth doing something about it instead of waiting it out. Local estrogen therapy and, in some cases, testosterone can help effectively. Good treatment options are available for almost all women.

What can you do yourself?

These adjustments can offer relief, although they don't fully address the cause:

  • Use a moisturizing gel regularly, not just during sex, to keep the vaginal wall supple.
  • Choose a water-based lubricant during sexual contact to reduce irritation.
  • Avoid scented soap or shower gel in the intimate area, as this can worsen irritation.
  • Stay sexually active if that feels good: regular blood flow supports tissue elasticity.

How Menovia addresses this

At Menovia, vaginal dryness is a symptom we discuss seriously and without embarrassment. During the intake, a BIG-registered doctor discusses your symptoms and their impact on your daily life. Local estrogen therapy is often very effective for this symptom and works with minimal systemic absorption, making it a safe option for almost all women.

Where needed, we combine local treatment with blood testing and, if relevant, systemic hormone therapy for a more complete picture. In some cases, local testosterone can also help effectively. Good treatment options are available for almost all women.

You can get started quickly: no waiting list, and the 10-minute introductory call is free.

Frequently asked questions

Is vaginal dryness something to feel embarrassed about with the doctor?

Absolutely not. It's one of the most common menopause symptoms, and our doctors discuss this daily. There's nothing to be embarrassed about.

Does local estrogen therapy work without systemic hormone therapy?

Yes. Local estrogen therapy works primarily in the vaginal tissue itself and can work well as a standalone treatment.

How quickly does the treatment work?

Many women notice improvement within a few weeks, although the full effect can take a few months. The doctor monitors this during the program.

Are the costs reimbursed?

Since May 2026, part of the consultations are reimbursed through supplementary insurance, depending on your insurer and policy.
