Hot Flashes

Do you recognize this?
A wave of heat rising from your chest, a flushed face, sudden sweating, and a minute later you're cold again. Hot flashes often strike at the most inconvenient moments: during a meeting, in the checkout line, or in the middle of the night. About 80% of women experience symptoms during menopause, and hot flashes are among the most common.
Many women also recognize:
- Heart palpitations during a hot flash
- A restless or anxious feeling right before one hits
- Disrupted nights from sweating
- Embarrassment or self-consciousness around others
Hot flashes are harmless, but they can significantly affect your daily life. And it's important to know: you don't have to just learn to live with them.
Why does this happen?
Hot flashes affect 70 to 80% of women and can range from mild and occasional to several per hour, day and night. They occur because declining estrogen levels disrupt thermoregulation in the hypothalamus. Your body's internal thermostat becomes more sensitive as a result, so even small temperature shifts can trigger a hot flash.
Symptoms are often most intense in late perimenopause. That's because estrogen levels fluctuate sharply during this phase rather than being stably low: those large swings cause dysregulation of the brain's internal thermometer. It's an important insight that symptoms during perimenopause are often more severe than during postmenopause, precisely for this reason.
For many women, vasomotor symptoms persist for five to ten years, and for some even longer. They don't automatically disappear once your period stops.

What can you do yourself?
A number of adjustments can make hot flashes milder or easier to manage:
- Know your triggers. Alcohol, caffeine, spicy food, and hot drinks trigger hot flashes in many women. Keeping a diary helps you spot your own pattern.
- Dress in layers and keep your bedroom cool (16 to 18 degrees Celsius).
- Exercise regularly. Women who exercise regularly often report milder symptoms.
- Work on relaxation. Stress can make hot flashes worse; breathing exercises can help in the moment.
How Menovia addresses this
At Menovia, we look beyond just the hot flash itself, to the hormonal picture behind it. During the intake, a BIG-registered doctor discusses your symptoms and medical history with you. With targeted blood testing, we map out your hormone levels, and depending on your package, also your thyroid function, blood sugar, and vitamin status, since these can make symptoms worse.
Based on that, the doctor draws up a personal treatment plan, usually with personally dosed bio-identical hormones. For many women, hot flashes can significantly decrease as a result. Every 12 weeks we repeat the blood test and adjust as needed, so your treatment moves with your body.
There's no waiting list: after signing up, you can quickly get a free 10-minute introductory call.
