Hair Loss and Skin Changes

Thinning hair and a duller, less elastic skin: this too is part of menopause, and is partly explained by hormones.

Do you recognize this?

Your hairbrush fills up faster than before, or you notice more hair left behind in the shower. Your skin feels drier, loses some of its elasticity, and fine lines seem to deepen faster. These changes often creep in gradually, which sometimes makes you wonder if it's all in your head. It isn't.

Many women recognize:

  • Thinning hair, especially around the crown and hairline
  • Dry, less elastic skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles that seem to deepen faster
  • Nails that break more easily than before

These are visible consequences of a hormonal shift, not simply a sign of getting older.

Why does this happen?

Estrogen supports the production of collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep your skin firm and supple. Less collagen means thinner, drier skin that retains moisture less well.

For hair, a shifting balance between estrogen and androgens plays a role. When the relative influence of androgens increases as estrogen declines, hair follicles can become more sensitive, leading to thinner and more brittle hair, often most noticeable around the crown.

There's another cause that often gets missed: a low ferritin level, in other words your iron stores. Low ferritin causes fatigue and hair loss, symptoms that closely resemble menopause and are therefore quickly attributed to hormones alone. An underactive thyroid also causes dry skin and hair. That's exactly why broader blood testing is worthwhile here.

What can you do yourself?

These adjustments can contribute to healthier hair and more resilient skin:

  • Enough protein and iron, both are building blocks for hair growth; a deficiency worsens hair loss.
  • Protect your skin from the sun, UV radiation further accelerates collagen loss.
  • Be gentle with your hair, avoid tight braiding or excessive heat styling, which weakens vulnerable follicles further.
  • Hydrate from the inside out, enough water and healthy fats support your skin's moisture balance.

How Menovia addresses this

At Menovia, we look at the full hormonal picture for hair loss and skin changes, not just sex hormones. During the intake, a BIG-registered doctor discusses your symptoms and how they've progressed. Through blood testing we map out your hormone levels, and depending on your package, also your thyroid function, iron status, and vitamin D, all three of which affect hair and skin.

Based on that, the doctor draws up a personal treatment plan, often with personally dosed bio-identical hormones. Many women find their skin and hair regain resilience as hormonal balance is restored. Every 12 weeks we evaluate and adjust based on blood values and how you're feeling.

You can get started quickly: no waiting list, and the 10-minute introductory call is free.

Frequently asked questions

Is hair loss during menopause permanent?

It usually progresses gradually and can improve for many women when hormonal balance is supported. Complete baldness rarely occurs with hormonally related hair loss.

Does hormone therapy help against skin aging?

Some women find their skin feels more supple when hormonal balance is supported. Whether this fits your situation is assessed by the doctor during the intake.

Should I see a dermatologist or Menovia?

That depends on the cause. At Menovia we first map out the hormonal side; when needed, we refer you for targeted dermatological care.

Are the costs reimbursed?

Since May 2026, part of the consultations are reimbursed through supplementary insurance, depending on your insurer and policy.
