Good news for women living in the Netherlands and considering starting a hormone treatment plan with Menovia: since May 2026, Menovia's consultations are partly reimbursed through supplementary health insurance. A welcome step that lowers the barrier to getting the care you deserve.

In this article we explain exactly what is reimbursed, what isn't, and how to check what your specific policy covers.

What is reimbursed: the consultations

Menovia's consultations — such as the intake consultation, the treatment-plan consultation and the monitoring consultations — fall under the category natuurgeneeskundig consult (naturopathic consultation). Many supplementary insurance policies reimburse consultations of this kind as part of their alternative or complementary care package.

That means: if you have supplementary insurance that reimburses naturopathic consultations, you can claim (part of) the consultation costs back from your insurer.

What you get back per consultation varies by insurer and by policy. The maximum reimbursement per treatment ranges from €25 to €50 per day, with an annual cap that differs per insurer. Some insurers reimburse several hundred euros per year, others offer more limited cover.

Check what applies to you at www.zorgwijzer.nl/vergoeding/natuurgeneeskunde — there you can see, per insurer and per supplementary package, what is reimbursed.

Important conditions

Reimbursement from supplementary insurance isn't automatic. A few basic conditions always apply: you need supplementary insurance that entitles you to reimbursement of alternative or complementary care.

A few practical points to bear in mind:

  • No deductible (eigen risico): reimbursements from supplementary insurance fall outside the mandatory deductible — so you don't pay any deductible on these costs.
  • No referral needed: you usually don't need a referral from your GP. Always check your own policy conditions.
  • Invoice requirements: Menovia's invoice must meet the requirements your insurer sets, such as an AGB code and the correct name and address details. Menovia provides invoices that meet these requirements.
  • Not all insurers: cover and conditions vary considerably by insurer. Some insurers reimburse nothing at all for alternative care — always check this in advance.

What is not reimbursed: hormone supplementation

For the medication and hormones, the picture is different — and it's important to understand this properly before you start.

Registered medication via your regular pharmacy

Generic medication and bioidentical hormones that are available as a registered medicine and collected from your own pharmacy are largely reimbursed through basic insurance. This applies, for example, to registered oestradiol preparations (gel, patch) and registered progesterone (such as Utrogestan).

Custom preparations via a compounding pharmacy

Hormones with a personalised, adjusted dosage — compounded by a compounding pharmacy such as Infinity Pharma — are not reimbursed and are at your own expense. This is the case when standard dosages don't suit your hormone status and a tailored approach is needed.

DHEA and testosterone for women

DHEA and testosterone are not available as a registered medicine for women in the Netherlands. They are always dispensed via a compounding pharmacy and therefore fall outside reimbursement. These costs are always at your own expense.

Overview: what's reimbursed, what isn't?

  • Consultations (intake, treatment plan, monitoring): partly reimbursed via supplementary insurance — depending on your policy
  • Registered hormones via your regular pharmacy (oestradiol gel/patch, Utrogestan): largely reimbursed via basic insurance
  • Custom preparations via a compounding pharmacy: not reimbursed — at your own expense
  • DHEA and testosterone for women: not reimbursed — at your own expense
  • Diagnostics (blood tests, DNA, DUTCH test): not reimbursed via health insurance — included in the Menovia package

How do you check your reimbursement?

The quickest way is via www.zorgwijzer.nl/vergoeding/natuurgeneeskunde — select your health insurer and supplementary package and immediately see what applies to you.

Not sure, or want to be certain? Call your health insurer directly and mention the category natuurgeneeskundig consult.

What does this mean for the cost of Menovia?

The Menovia programme is an all-in package: the consultations, the extensive blood tests, DNA analysis (with Plus and Compleet) and guidance are included in the package price. Depending on your supplementary insurance, you may get part of the consultation costs back — further lowering the net investment in your health.
